Never used OODBs myself but I know that ORMs lag behind native implementations. Various versions of LINQ (there are 3 types today) are 2-10 times slower (50-10% of speed achieved by handtweaking SQL query). It should improve with time but personally I see no real benefit in case of time-critical applications (online, heavy load, DB bound).

Adi: I agree. Python looks pretty good. Django is suppose to be a great Python web framework, too. Unfortunetly, I've never used it for anything serious, so I didn't think I could mention it with much authority. One day I'll give it a try.

Another notable example: Python (see http://pypi.python.org/pypi/ for a repository of Python packages).

Rant: Talking about scripting/dynamic languages. Personally, I don't like Ruby at all. Perl - maybe, but Python rules. Everything is there where it needs to be, and behaves the way you would expect. The first time I saw a Python code, I could read it effortlessly, without knowing anything about the Python syntax.

I really, really don't like PEAR. ASP.NET is probably better today, but back in 1.1 era it was painful in many ways. It was still much better than writing in pure PHP. Today if I were forced to write web app, I'd probably use PHP with CodeIgniter and modules extension (available on CI wiki).

It's hard to be revolutionary in search space. What matters is search relevance and presentation. Live has proven that simple stuff like too bright font on white page makes it harder to use search. IMO they nailed UI. Now it's time to fix query results...

Adi: You have a point, but it's nothing revolutionary. People have tried similar layouts before and they didn't make a dent in the market.

I give them credit, though, for a clean way to display search results (in a news-style tabloid format). The tab-based search categories is interesting. I am would be not surprised if Google copied some of their layout/display/categorization ideas ...

You are my new hero! Thank you so, so much! That easy fix and for the wonderful explanation. Your explanation is very clear and I really appreciate it having the 'why' and solution. Again thank you!
